Untrusted SSL certificate issue

Issue: You receive a message from the browser that states the certificate is not trusted
Or: The certificate is installed, but returns 'the page cannot be displayed' using Internet Explorer
(displays with an error in Firefox)

Cause: You have not correctly installed all certificates

Solution: Make sure all certificates are installed by carefully reading and following the instructions for installation for your specific web server, THERE IS MORE THAN ONE CERTIFICATE TO INSTALL

Most often, this issue is a result of an incorrectly installed or missing intermediate (chain) certificate. This certificate is required in addition to your site certificate for correct functionality. Below are links to the install instructions for the most common web servers:

  Microsoft IIS 4.x

  Microsoft IIS 5.x

  Apache Mod SSL

  Apache OpenSSL

If you are using Apache, it is worth checking the paths for each certificate file within your httpd.conf to make sure that each file is accessible to the webserver (Apache will report errors in its error log file if certificates are not found).
